Evolution of the Central Sulcus Morphology in Primates

چکیده
The central sulcus (CS) divides the preand postcentral gyri along the dorsal-ventral plane of which all motor and sensory functions are topographically organized. The motorhand area of the precentral gyrus or KNOB has been described as the anatomical substrate of the hand in humans. Given the importance of the hand in primate evolution, here we examine the evolution of the motor-hand area by comparing the relative size and pattern of cortical folding of the CS surface area from magnetic resonance images in 131 primates, including Old World monkeys, apes and humans. We found that humans and great apes have a well-formed motor-hand area that can be seen in the variation in depth of Received: May 27, 2013 Returned for revision: June 22, 2013 Accepted after revision: March 20, 2014 Published online: August 13, 2014 William D. متن کاملMorphoarchitectural variation in South African fossil cercopithecoid endocasts.
Despite the abundance of well-preserved crania and natural endocasts in the South African Plio-Pleistocene cercopithecoid record, which provide direct information relevant to the evolution of their endocranial characteristics, few studies have attempted to characterize patterns of external brain morphology in this highly successful primate Superfamily. The availability of non-destructive penetr...
متن کاملMorphology and histology of chimpanzee primary visual striate cortex indicate that brain reorganization predated brain expansion in early hominid evolution.
Human brain evolution is characterized by an overall increase in brain size, cerebral reorganization, and cerebral lateralization. It is generally understood when brain enlargement occurred during human evolution. However, issues concerning cerebral reorganization and hemispheric lateralization are more difficult to determine from brain endocasts, and they are topics of considerable debate. One...
متن کاملTopography of Sylvian Fissure and Central Sulcus as Neurosurgical Landmarks: an Anatomical Study Using Cadaveric Specimens in Iran
Background and Aim: In the present study, the cerebral surface landmarks in human fresh autopsy specimens were investigated. Methods and Materials/Patients: Totally, 37 fresh adult autopsy human brain specimens from the Rasht Forensic Medicine Center were enrolled. Four specimens were excluded because of some traumatic injuries to cerebral cortex. Demographic information of all cases was obt...
متن کاملSocial life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size
Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...
